Amanda Bynes Quits Hollywood: Behind Her Erratic Behavior

With more and more Americans holding out on retirement, it’s getting to the point where people are frequently working well into their 70s. Not so for Amanda Bynes, who announced on Sunday via Twitter that she was ending her acting career at the ripe old age of 24. “Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem,” she tweeted. “If I don’t love something, I stop doing it. I don’t love acting anymore, so I’ve stopped doing it.”

That was her version, at least.

Her struggle is one many child actors face as they get older and discover that they have to reconnect with audiences all over again.

The other version is that Hollywood had mostly broken up with her—that after a highly successful run as a child actress on Nickelodeon, her career began to sputter. She was fired this spring from the Farrelly brothers’ film Hall Pass, according to a person familiar with the project. That seems to have coincided with a break within her that Bynes is now enacting in public. Her Twitter feed has become a place for what seems like compulsive oversharing, not just about retiring, but other random topics as well—for example, her interest in trying magic mushrooms and her sexualattraction to black men. (She has been linked on and off with rapper Kid Cudi, and has tweeted about him obliquely for months.)

Though sources say her CAA agents had a please-get-help talk with her this year, Bynes has so far resisted. And her parents, whom she has supported for years, have not been able to get the actress back on track. Her friends are concerned about her behavior.

Reps for Bynes did not respond to a request for comment about her retirement. But her personal publicist, Melissa Raubvogel, denied Bynes had been fired, and said no such event had happened with CAA.

Though Bynes was clearly talented, with a charming turn as Tracy Turnblad’s sidekick in the hit remake of Hairspray, a slew of projects featuring her more prominently simply didn’t do as well.

Her struggle is one many child actors face as they get older and discover that they have to reconnect with audiences all over again. For every Drew Barrymore, there’s a Molly Ringwald, for every Josh Brolin, there’s a Corey Feldman.

Bynes had never really been a major screen star, but her run on the small screen was nothing to sneeze at. After being discovered at a comedy camp at the age of 7 or 8, she was cast in All That, a sketch-comedy show on the MTV-owned network, which The New York Times described as a kind of “pint sizeSaturday Night Live.”

Then came The Amanda Show, where she played a variety of characters, one of whom was based on Judge Judy. After that, she went right into the WB sitcom, What I Like About You, in which Bynes and Jennie Garth played sisters. Though a modest hit by network standards, the comedy had a loyal audience of young fans, and solidified Bynes’ base as a teen star.

At 15, Universal released her first big movie, Big Fat Liar, a teenage comedy co-starring Frankie Muniz of Malcolm in the Middle. It did well, grossing nearly $50 million off a budget believed to be under $20 million.

But after that, her record was spottier.

Aside from her appearance in Hairspray, Bynes had the leading role in She’s the Man, a romantic comedy about a young girl who dresses in drag so that she can play on her school soccer team. It grossed a tepid $33.7 million. Then cameSydney White, ”a modern day update of Snow White. It topped out at $13.6 million, and made it harder for her to get lead roles. “Often, what makes an actor appealing as a child simply doesn’t work for them as an adult,” says someone who’s worked with Bynes, adding that the comedy acting she excelled at as a child didn’t translate into dramatic films.

Still, Bynes was famous enough to get a clothing line with Steve & Barry’s, the discount chain that produced wares for Sarah Jessica Parker’s brand, Bitten. She also landed a cover with Maxim. But after a burst of success, the retail giant imploded, the victim of the credit crunch and excessive discounting that made turning a profit nearly impossible.

Amanda Bynes was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of DUI in West Hollywood after she allegedly hit the rear corner of a sheriff’s cruiser while trying to pass it.

That is most certainly not “What a Girl Wants.”

In the wake of her 3 a.m. arrest, the “She’s the Man” actress and former Nickelodeon star was in custody at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, L.A. Now reported, before being released around 10:30 a.m. on $5,000 bail. She was arrested near the intersection of Robertson and Santa Monica boulevards.

Bynes has been hitting the Hollywood party scene recently, according to TMZ, which had late-night St. Patrick’s Day footage taken outside a club where the photographer cautioned the valet against letting her drive — a caution that was ignored as the actress left in her Range Rover with a friend.

Yes, we did say “actress,” though it’s hard to tell sometimes: Bynes retired from acting for a whole month in the summer of 2010, only to announce her return via Twitter a bit ahead of the release of “Easy A,” which she appeared in with Emma Stone. That September 2010 release is still her most recent.

And about that hair in the mug shot above — it would appear to be the latter days of lilac, as Bynes broadcast a month ago on Twitter, “Did I mention I dyed my hair lilac?!?!?! LILAC !!!!!!!!”

When Hollywood grist start flying you don’t really expect to hear about young starlet Amanda Bynes plastic surgery rumors (see also Hilary Duff .

Born April 3 1986, Bynes was a child star, made famous for her roles on shows all over the kids’ station Nickelodeon, and at the young age of 24 in 2010 she made the announcement that she was retiring from acting.

She said that she’d done it, but she didn’t love it any more, and Bynes wanted to try her hand at something else and find a new love.

It was actually right around the time of this particular announcement that idle talk about her getting plastic surgery started to crop up.

Has Amanda Bynes Had Plastic Surgery?

Despite accusations that Amanda Bynes is now a young plastic surgery celebrity, she has not confirmed any sort of cosmetic procedures. Like others such as Kat Von D (see Kat Von D plastic surgery), no one seems to know.

For that matter no one has come forward and said they have insider information, or that they’d seen her medical chart.

All that people have scraped up so far are the obligatory images that show Bynes with a changing appearance.

And if you look at those pictures they do clearly show that Bynes looks different now than she did when she was younger.

Bynes has a slimmer face now, and it looks as if her cheekbones are higher and more defined.

Her teeth are bright, and some have accused her of getting dental veneers which

make her mouth look over crowded.

And there are also the obligatory accusations of breast implants, lip procedures, rhinoplasty and other, “standard” cosmetic surgeries in Hollywood (see also Kim Kardashian plastic surgery before and after)

But just because she’s been accused, does that mean that Amanda Bynes has gone all the way and gotten celebrity plastic surgery at such a young age?

There is, however, another explanation for the differences that people see in the Amanda Bynes before and after pictures.

It’s important to remember that Bynes was a child star, and most of her acting was done in her teens.

Even her photos in Maxim magazine, showing that she’s definitely all grown up, were when she was in her early 20s. The simplest explanation for the fact that her face and lips have changed shape is that she’s growing up.

Bynes kept her baby fat for longer than most actresses, and it was very obvious that she was keeping it because of all the work she was doing at the time.

Now that she’s finished growing and maturing, she’s finally shed the looks of her teen years.

That isn’t to say that one explanation is right and the other wrong (see plastic surgery gone wrong), but it’s important that when you listen to rumors about plastic surgery that you look at every possible angle to see what seems most likely.

Given how young Amanda Bynes is, and the fact that she never had any mysterious down time that would indicate surgery recovery, the idea that she’s gone under the knife seems ludicrous.

But who knows, maybe the Amanda Bynes plastic surgery rumors are true, after all.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said Sunday afternoon that an autopsy on pop icon Whitney Houston’s body has been completed, but official results have been placed on hold, pending toxicology tests.

Los Angeles Deputy Coroner Ed Winter said at a press conference that the tests could take six to eight weeks to process.

Winter added that the Beverly Hills Police Department had requested a “security hold” on the results of the coroner’s investigation, meaning no further details will be made available until the inquiry is complete.

He confirmed earlier comments made by police that “no foul play is suspected.”

He also confirmed that Houston was found Saturday afternoon in a bath tub in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Prescription drugs had been found in the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel room where Houston’s lifeless body was discovered Saturday afternoon just hours before a huge Grammy party she was to attend.

Police discovered a half dozen bottles of medication in Houston’s room, TMZ reported, adding that family members said Houston had been taking the prescription drug Xanax, which is often used to treat anxiety.

When combined with alcohol, Xanax can cause drowsiness. Houston was reportedly found in her bathtub — TMZ says her head was underwater — and could not be revived by paramedics after being removed from the tub.

No alcohol was found in the preliminary sweep of Houston’s room, TMZ reports, but there were multiple reports that Houston had been drinking with friends the night before at the hotel.

Houston had also attended rehearsals for the Grammys on Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The person said Houston looked disheveled, was sweating profusely and liquor and cigarettes could be smelled on her breath.

She was also observed behaving “erratically” earlier in the week at a Los Angeles club, according to multiple reports.

Houston’s body was removed from the hotel early Sunday morning, hours after the Grammy awards party she was there to attend had taken place four floors below her room.

Houston was 48.

Once pop music’s undisputed queen, her voice and image had been ravaged by decades of drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

Houston’s death on the eve of the Grammy Awards sent shock waves through the music industry, with many stars expressing shock and sadness.

Brown reportedly broke down backstage before a show with his band New Edition in Southhaven, a few miles south of Memphis.

Brown skipped the first song of the concert, but appeared onstage for the second. He shouted, “I love you, Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage.” He then blew a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.

Aretha Franklin, her godmother, said in a short statement: “I just can’t talk about it now. It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen.”

Houston’s death will likely put a damper on Sunday’s Grammy awards, music’s biggest night of the year. Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan will perform a tribute to Houston at the awards, according to reports.

Grammy executive producer Ken Erhlich said event organizers believed Hudson — an Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning artist — could perform a “respectful musical tribute” to Houston, the Los Angeles Times reported.

“It’s too fresh in everyone’s memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize Whitney’s remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and, in particular, her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years,” Ehrlich told the newspaper.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

“Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades,” Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy said in a statement.

“Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice,” he said.

Houston influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who, when she debuted, sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once-serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album “I Look To You.” The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on “Good Morning America” went awry as Houston’s voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out.

Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

“Friends are really happy with her relationship with Tom,” the source tells Us. “He’s younger, yes, but he’s mature and he’s a good guy.”

They first split in 2006 after two years of dating when Law admitted to cheating on the star with his children’s nanny.
